Top 10 Daily Dental Health Tips

What is the best daily dental health regimen?

One question we often get asked is what is the best daily method to help prevent dental disease and stay away from the dentists chair. The answer is not so easy, but here is a simple list of the Top 10 things you can be doing everyday that will dramatically turnaround your dental health.

Step One - You need to look at your diet and avoid the sugars and sticky carbohydrates and soda as well as adding the good oils and minerals your body needs to start remineralizing your tooth enamel. Take plenty of Vitamin C for your gums, and Vitamin D for bones. Without a good diet, your can't have healthy bones, gums and tooth enamel. Step Two - Understand that brushing your teeth using toxic chemical based commercial toothpastes is just moving the dental bacteria that cause dental decay and gum disease from one side of the mouth to another. You have to use some anti-microbial agent that will kill off the harmful Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus bacteria. See this article on dental bacteria here.

Step Three - Change to a toothpaste that promotes the natural re-mineralization of the tooth enamel, and has anti-microbial agents to combat the harmful Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus bacteria. See our review of natural toothpastes here.

Step Four - buy a dental irrigator and use it with an anti-microbial agents to cleanse the mouth of harmful bacteria. A mixture of sea salt and baking soda (50/50) with a splash of hydrogen peroxide will rapidly kill off colonies of bacteria. See our review of dental irrigation here.

Step Five - start oil -pulling each morning by taking a tablespoon of sesame, coconut or olive oil and swishing it through the teeth. Use a strong suction to force it through the gaps between the teeth, and swish for 5 minutes or so. Don't swallow. This process stimulates the saliva glands, cleanses the teeth and removes harmful toxins into the oil. The oil will turn white after a few minutes. Carefully dispose of the oil and rinse the mouth or use the dental irrigator. This will strengthen your gums, turns the teeth whiter and will inexpensively and quickly benefit your oral health.

Step Six - once you see the benefits you will throw away your existing fluoride based toothpastes. If you have fluoride in your tap water, use a water filter or buy bottled water. Very few filters remove fluoride, so make sure you check carefully. Many of the most popular filters do not.

Step Seven - buy a SonicCare toothbrush. Although we are not in the business of recommending products, this line of toothbrushes is by far the best on the market. Although some in the range are expensive, they truly last and provide excellent brushing, long-life and technology innovation. As with any electronic product, some models are better than others.

Step Eight - throw away your commercial mouthwash such as Listerine etc. They all contain alcohol which feeds the tooth bacteria, and many contain harsh chemicals that won't help your oral health. Instead make your own herbal mouthwash, or buy a natural herb based mouthwash that is alcohol free. Alcohol in mouthwash has been linked to oral cancers. You can make your own antimicrobial rinse. Good natural antimicrobial herbs include - echinacea, goldenseal, calendula, aloe vera, bloodroot, and grapefruit seed extracts. Mix with mint or another flavour that you like.

Step Nine - Drink plenty of non fluorinated water to keep the saliva flowing and remineralizing your teeth. Drinking water after meals will also help to wash away the foods and acids.

Step 10 - now that you have your dental health under control, find a dentist that is willing to work on you to support preventative dental health. Biological dentists who have a holistic approach do exist in most cities. For a list of Biological dentists in the UK, click here.
