Preventative Dental

What is the best way to prevent dental disease?

Our natural protection, long before the toothbrush or dentists existed is our enamel, which is one of the hardest substances in the body. If we visit a natural history museum you will see plenty of examples in nature of how effective the enamel is at protecting the tooth for hundreds and even thousands of years under a tremendous range of hostile environments.

Once the enamel is penetrated and the tooth bacteria begin to get to work, dental decay inevitably follows. One small cavity, when exposed three or four years later becomes deeper under the filing itself. The dental bacteria, s. mutans, is around 1 micron in size. By way of contrast the human hair is around 100 microns.

The key to preventing cavities is ensuring that we have healthy gums, good bone growth and strong enamel.

How to be Cavity Free.

There are two main ways of ensuring that you are cavity free. One is external, the other internal.

Step One - Dental Sealants .

The first and easiest is to use dental sealants. While many are against putting plastic coating on their teeth, dental sealants do work, and they are especialy good for children and adolscents with braces. See detailed article on dental sealants, cost of dental sealants, and BPA and dental sealant.

Step Two - Tooth Remineralization and Diet

We can also alter our diet and tooth reminerilzation ability natually to strengthen the enamel and bones so they are much stronger and resist bacteria naturally. Doing so has a lot of additional benefits. See detailed articles on how to use diet and tooth remineralization to prevent tooth decay.
