What Causes Gums to Recede? How to Treat Gum Recession.
What are the causes for Receding Gums?
The saying "long in the tooth" referring to older people says it all. As we age our gums recede leaving more of the tooth exposed, making our teeth look longer.
There are many possible causes of recession:
Gum Disease - is the most prevalent - As we age Periodontal Disease is way more common. The bacteria that live in pockets between the gum and the teeth build up as we age, and eventually start to cause serious damage as the bacteria grow and multiply, forcing the gum away from the tooth. The chances are quite high, that is you have receding gums you also have gum disease. For how to cure gum disease click here
Poor Diet: If your diet is poor, you can expect poor gum health. The affects of total deprivation of Vitamin C are well know, eventually the teeth fall out. What is not well know is that the mass production / factory farming has dramatically reduced the vitamin content so that some oranges contain virtually no vitamin C. The Journal of the American Dietetic Association (April 2002) recently reported that the vitamin C content of ready-to-drink orange juice products is lower than formerly believed. Four weeks after a container is open, practically all the vitamin C is gone from the whole carton. See this article for the best diet for optimal dental health
External Factors - smoking, excessive brushing, grinding teeth, chewing tobacco, drugs, piercings, sensitivity to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), an ingredient in most commercial toothpastes, can all cause gum's to recede.
Adult Braces: The recent trend for adult braces has also brought about an increase in gum damage.
