Getting Braces Removed

How are Braces Removed?

You are excited. Your braces are finally coming off. What can you expect? Will it hurt?

Taking off the braces is usually fairly painless and relatively simple. When the time has finally come your orthodontist will break the adhesive bond between the bracket and your tooth with a special pair of pliers. Expecting to hear a sharp clip, but rest assured you won't feel pain. The base of the bracket may also be squeezed which make the bond release and so releases the bracket.

Metal braces are easier to remove than the ceramic ones. Your dentists will drill around each one to remove excess adhesive, and then each ceramic bracket is removed with a special tool. Some pressure will have to be applied, and they can crack, so it may take some time to get each ceramic bracket to dislodge.

After the brackets have been removed, bonding glue needs to come off each tooth. also be removed typically with a drill and then a high speed polisher. The drilling/polishing of the glue can take a while but, again this does not provide too much discomfort. Only the adhesive is removed - the tooth structure and enamel are not affected.

After the braces are removed the gums may well be sensitive, and your teeth will feel strange and awkward as you get used to life without braces.
