Reversing Dental Cavities Through Diet Alone

Natural Repair and Re-growth of Cavities Through Diet

Although the primary method of preventative protection from dental cavities comes through remineralizing the teeth to strengthen the enamel layer, what happens if the enamel layer is damaged. Can diet alone reverse the dental decay?

Once enamel damage occurs either through dental decay, or by drilling out the enamel to place a filling or other dental restoration, the tooth loses its natural protection against Streptoccocus Mutans and other dental bacteria.

Since the enamel does not re-grow how can your diet help to reverse cavities?

Dr Weston Price in the USA and Dr. Mellanby in the UK showed how cavities could be reversed through diet alone. Whole teeth cannot be magically regrown, but Dr Price has many examples in his Book "Nutrition and Degeneration" showing how the dentin layers fills in the cavity.

Dr Mellanby in the UK, as quoted in this WholeFood blog by Stephan Guyunet

The hardening of carious areas that takes place in the teeth of children fed on diets of high calcifying value indicates the arrest of the active process and may result in “healing” of the infected area. As might be surmised, this phenomenon is accompanied by a laying down of a thick barrier of well-formed secondary denture. Illustrations of this healing process can be seen in Figs. 21 (b), (c) and (d). Summing up these results it will be clear that the clinical deductions made on the basis of the animal experiments have been justified, and that it is now known how to diminish the spread of caries and even to stop the active carious process in many affected teeth.

An Apple

There are two cells types at work here - ameloblasts which create the enamel in the first place, but which then die as the tooth erupts, and dentinoblasts which live and produce new dentin over time.

It is these dentioblasts cells which can stimulated to generate more dentin by a diet very rich in Vitamins and Minerals to produce more dentin and "fill in" in the cavity.

Dr Weston Price reported that some of the native people he studied that did have broken teeth, had their teeth almost completely 'filled' in by the dentin layer, preventing further damage to the teeth.

Both Dr Price and Dr Mellanby used large amounts of Cod Liver Oil for Vitamin D, full fat butter and milk, and low amounts of grains.
