Root Canal treated teeth do sometimes hurt post-treatment for a variety of reasons: Crack in the Tooth: One of the most common reasons for pain is a cracked tooth. Your dentists drills open the tooth to gain access to the root, cleans out the roots and then seals the tooth up ready for a crown. During the whole process, the tooth is weakened with the removal of the root, and the tooth is exposed to additional pressure from the crown or temporary crown. If the tooth is left untreated with no crown, the unprotected and weakened tooth is very vulnerable to cracking. During this time it's possible that the tooth will crack after the crown is placed. Root Canal Infection: If the root canal is not fully cleaned and disinfected an infection of the canals can occur. The difficulty here is that your dentist may not be able to see the area of infection on the x-ray for a period of time. In earlier stages, nothing is apparent. Your dentist will try a variety of hot and cold test to try and identify the source of the pain. Additional Pressure on the Tooth Since their is no nerve the weakened tooth may be under pressure from other teeth or just from the new crown and any irregular bite issues. |
