What is Stomatitis?

Stomatitis is a painful condition that results in a swelling and inflammation of the mouth. It can occur in the gums, tongue, lips or mucous lining of the mouth. The inflammation can be caused by external factors, such as ill fitting braces, dentures, hot food, biting your tongue or cheek, or by eating foods that puncture the mucous lining of your mouth. Stomatitis may even result in the formation of ulcers in the gums and mouth. Since it's an infection it is also associated with poor oral hygiene. However, it can also be a sign of an underlying health condition, allergy, reaction to medication and infection caused by candida albicans or thrush.

Symptoms of stomatitis:
If you happen to be suffering from stomatitis, you might find it very painful and difficult to eat, especially if it's on the tongue. Sometimes your tongue can swell until its bright red and it becomes difficult to talk. Other symptoms of stomatitis include slight fever, constipation, foul breath, vomiting after meals and loss of appetite.

Treatment for stomatitis:
Mix Baking soda and Salt 50/50 and add a splash of hydrogen peroxide and brush the mixture on. This will really help kill the infection quickly. Leave the mixture on as long as you can. Best is to use a dental irrigator and make sure you get all over the mouth and tongue. Lemon juice is also good for stomatitis. You can also gargle with lemon juice which is very beneficial for Stomatitis. Stomatitis like canker sore and mouth ulcers are often a sign of a dietary inbalance. Stomatitis is associated with iron deficiency and Vitamin B deficiencies. Generally, eating a poor diet with soda, processed foods, bread, refined sugars and no fresh fruit and vegetables will exacerbate the disease.
